Sub-Base Preparation and Formation Build-Up

A strong foundation is key to long-term car park durability. We excavate to formation level, compact subgrades, and lay high-performance sub-base layers such as MOT Type 1 or Type 3 — ensuring the structure can support light and heavy vehicles alike.

Our formation and base build-ups include:

• Subgrade assessment and CBR testing

• Compacted MOT Type 1 or open-graded Type 3

• Geo-fabric separation membranes

• Reduced level digs and formation trimming

• Optional cement or lime stabilisation for poor ground

We also construct base layers in preparation for surfacing works such as tarmac, block paving, or resin-bound finishes.

Drainage, Kerbs, and Edging

Effective water management is essential in car park design. United Civils installs full surface water drainage systems as part of the groundwork package, including:

• ACO and linear drainage channels

• Gulleys and catchpits

• Soakaways and attenuation crates

• Surface water connection to public sewers

• SUDS-compliant permeable systems (where specified)

We also install all associated kerbs and edgings to layout drawings — including HB2 kerbs, BN drop kerbs, tactile crossings, and pre-cast concrete edgings.

Service Ducting and Street Furniture Bases

Car parks often include lighting columns, EV charge points, signage, and CCTV. We install service ducting and concrete bases to support these components as part of the groundwork phase.

Typical installations include:

• Electrical and comms ducting

• Street lighting column foundations

• Signage post bases and bollard footings

• EV charger pads and drainage provisions

By integrating these works early, we prevent future disruption and ensure all infrastructure is in place for the final surface and fit-out.

Health & Safety, Certification, and Supervision

All groundwork operatives are fully qualified, with CSCS, CPCS, and Street Works accreditation where required. We prepare and follow RAMS for each phase, and supervisors oversee progress, safety, and quality at all times.

We also liaise with client teams, main contractors, and surfacing crews to ensure handovers are smooth and deadlines are met.
